Learning is a process~by Kellie Baltrip
“A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops.” ~Henry Adams~
Every time I have the opportunity to go before a classroom, I am given the chance to share my passion for learning with my students. Each child has potential and talents that can be used as a foundation to build upon. Education is a starting point, and the classroom is the sacred place where individual differences can be noticed and celebrated. All students are entitled to a quality education and I want to provide this through a stimulating learning environment. Effective teaching can create children that have a good understanding of the world they live in, and ways that they can make a positive change. Learning should be a partnership between the teacher and student. My attitude will influence the motivation of my students, so that is why a teacher should always smile as much as possible and make all the learning experiences meaningful for their students. Children do not come to us as blank slates; they have their own ideas, tragedies, attitudes, and interests. I hope to take these past experiences, at whatever grade level, and try to use them to maximize their learning potential. By recognizing his or her abilities, I wish to create a desire to become a lifelong learner. Encouraging my students to succeed will help them to overcome their difficulties and empower them to develop a deeper understanding of themselves.
Effective teaching involves flexibility, creativity, and reflection. Students can learn best through interactive teaching methods which require them to be active with both teachers and other students. Students will want to learn if they have a voice in the learning process. A motivated student will want to take responsibility for their own learning. Teaching a child how to think clearly and critically is a key ingredient to effective teaching. By allowing students to question and reflect on relationships among different areas of interest we are developing children that are independent themselves and problem solvers. Teachers should always create possibilities from which a student can learn. By providing realistic challenges and opportunities to succeed, I hope to create a healthy learning environment that my students can immerse themselves within. My mission as a teacher is to promote positive learning, spark an enthusiasm for learning and provide a strong foundation to build learning skills. To accomplish this I need to apply a variety of strategies based upon diverse educational principles. When planning lessons I am careful to tailor my instruction to make sure that I do not risk the possibility of my students experiencing ‘hit or miss’ learning.
To gain the respect of my students, I must always respect them. Classrooms with positive atmospheres are considered more conducive to learning. Students will communicate more openly when they feel accepted and supported rather than judged or rejected. The relationship between the students and the teacher should be complementary. By creating a more democratic climate in the classroom, I hope to foster trust between myself and my students, which can result in us both becoming productive. Focusing on certain management techniques can cause the classroom to run more efficiently with less down time. Idle time can result in boredom and lead to discipline problems. I think we can learn from our students as well as from experienced teachers. The most important thing to do in teaching is create an open communication between yourself and your students, their parents, and your fellow colleagues. By having good listening skills and the ability to interpret non-verbal behaviors you can by-pass many of the problems that could arise. I hope to empower my students. I believe every child has the ability to do great and wonderful things with their lives; it only takes the nurturing and encouragement from those around them to help them realize their potential. A teacher needs to be an intellectual and moral role model before their students. For my students to become lifelong learners they must first see that in me.
